India: Maoists step up relief work in Jharkhand
RANCHI: With the mercury dipping and about a dozen reported deaths from the cold wave, Maoist guerrillas are the ones who have stepped up relief work in parts of Jharkhand even as the government is yet to react to it.
Reports reaching here say the members of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) have distributed more than 1,000 blankets and warm clothes among the poor people in Palamau and Chatra districts and Saranda jungle of West Singhbhum district.
They are also arranging firewood for the people.
Four people have died due to cold wave in Ranchi alone. The mercury hovered around 3 degree Celsius here in the past few days and the meteorological department has predicted further dip this winter.
Reacting on the Maoist move, a senior police official police involved in anti-Maoist operation, told IANS: 'Maoist rebels grab every opportunity to win the hearts of people. And here the government fails.'
'This failure causes setback for the police as people are not ready to cooperate with us.'
'In a poor state like Jharkhand, more than half the population live Below Poverty Line. Unless poor peoples' basic issues are addressed, the police alone cannot end the Maoist problem', he added.
It seems the state government hasn't taken any lessons from the past. Last winter, more than 50 people died in the cold wave as they did not have proper clothes to wear.
