VISAKHAPATNAM: Police unearthed three directional mines, each weighing 400 kilos, from a huge dump in the forest near Peddavalasa of GK Veedhi mandal here on Tuesday.
On a tip-off, a special police party found the mines, which could have caused major destruction. They are in addition to the three mines recovered in the same mandal in March this year.
Superintendent of Police JG Murali told this website’s newspaper that six mines were brought from Andhra-Orissa border to the district last year. “Three mines were discovered four months ago and another three were found today,” he said.
It may be recalled that the special police parties unearthed 60 kg gelatin sticks and a Thompson sub-machine gun from a dump in Puttakota forest area of GK Veedhi mandal on Oct 19. Twenty five claymore mines were recovered in Koyyuru mandal earlier.
The latest haul of mines came as a rude jolt to the police who are grappling with the situation arising from the spurt in Maoist activities in the Andhra - Orissa Border area.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports of CPI (Maoist) AOB leader Sudhakar being surrounded by the police in GK Veedhi mandal surcharged the already tense atmosphere.
