Patil appeals to Naxals to help curb terrorism
POLITICAL BUREAU
NEW DELHI, NOV 22: While appealing to naxalites to join national mainstream, home minister Shivraj Patil exhorted the security forces to ensure security of ‘soft targets’ from terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir on a priority basis.
Inaugurating the annual conference of DGPs/IGPs here on wednesday, Patil said Pakistan—based terrorist groups, like LeT, were trying to infilterate and send weapons through sea route. He said ISI directed terrorist groups were transporting terrorism to the Indian hinterland and trying to use local miscreants and organisations to perpetuate violence.
Terming naxalism a serious threat to national security, he said naxal actions at Jehanabad, Giridih and Udaigiri showed critical gaps in police training, response and collection of tactical intelligence.
Patil said that naxals were determined to acquire sophisticated arsenal to improve their might, spread their presence and were trying to sabotage development in their areas of influence. The police needed to remain on constant alert to nip naxal plans in the bud.
