Police need legal shield to fight terror, says Intelligence chief
Express News Service
New Delhi, November 23: Director of Intelligence Bureau (DIB) E S L Narasimhan told a gathering of senior police officials today that for effectively combating terrorism, not only are new laws required, but police officials also ought to be shielded by a legal framework.
“There is need for a more robust legal framework to deal with sudden terror attacks since police officials find themselves helpless in such situations. To counter terrorism, adequate legal protection to police officials is also needed,” he said.
Narasimhan’s argument stems from his view that terrorist outfits are increasingly adopting sophisticated technology, which is why there was also a need to equip the police with the equivalent infrastructure. His statement comes close on the heels of the revelation by Home Minister Shivraj Patil yesterday that jihadi outfits were planning to strike at economic installations and that efforts were on to occupy uninhabited islands to facilitate strikes on the mainland.
