Kolkata, January 7
A group of CPM cadres, armed with automatic rifles and other weapons and wearing police uniforms, raided Nandigram village last night and gunned down at least six farmers in accordance to the party’s suddenly adopted policy of applying force against the Krishi Bachaoo Committee, opposing the land transfer to Indonesia’s Salim group.

In the clashes that followed between the two groups, two CPM workers were also killed. Over 12 were severely injured either by gunshots or blasts and they had been admitted to different hospitals in Midnapore town and Kharagpur, where the condition of seven was stated to be critical.

The villagers killed included Biswajit Maiti, Bhudeb Mondal, Sk. Salim, Bharat Mondal, Sankar Samanta and Bishnu Maiti.

According to official reports, the CPM workers encircled Nandigram village around midnight and attacked the farmers assembled in the Garchakraberia, Sonachura and Tekhali bazaar areas. The attacks were retaliated and soon followed an armed clash between the two groups.

Oddly enough, there was no police force posted around the place at the time of the incident as it had been withdrawn earlier following the decision of the all-party meeting in the morning.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC), Congress, SUCI and several other parties have givev a call for Bangla bandh tomorrow demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and the imposition of President’s rule in the state.

Meanwhile, Mr Bhattacharjee, who was busy today negotiating with a Dubai-based industrialist, Sheikh Suleman, for an investment proposal at Kulpi in the Sunderbans where some 640 acres would be needed for the project, regretted the incident at Nandigram but reiterated that the industrial expansion programme would continue.

The incident was an outcome of a provocation call to the party cadres by Mr Benoy Konar, senior central committee member, who is also a prominent leader of the party’s Kishan Front, for confronting the unwilling farmers and their supporters with force for ensuring an easy transferring of 10,000 acres there to Salim industries.

He said their policy would now be “gun for gun and lathis for lathis”, alleging that some Naxalites and the branded criminals had been behind the farmers’ agitations who needed to be firmly tackled. Mr Konar had asked the Left front partners like the CPI, RSP and the Forward Bloc either to support the government or quit.

Leaders of the three major front partners, namely the CPI, RSP and the FB demanded that the government should immediately stop “land grabbing policy” and hold all-party talks and adopt a decision on the future land acquiring for industries.

Ms Mamata Banerjee, who has been recuperating at a nursing home, and Mr Pradip Bhattacharyya, working WBPCC president, squarely blamed the chief minister for acting as an agent of the capitalists and held him responsible for the innocent killing in the Nandigram village.

Nandigram, Jan. 7: Sonachura village wears the look of a battlefield where guns had fallen silent.

But the look is deceptive. An undercurrent of anger runs through the villages, many of whose residents had voted for the CPM for years.

“This is the first time blood has been spilled in this agitation. The deaths will only stoke the fire. Ashuk Lakshman Seth ba Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, punte rekhe debo (Let Lakshman Seth or Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee come here, we’ll bury them alive),” says a raging Sheikh Jahangir, whose 11-member family depends on his 13-bigha plot.

His neighbour Moin-ul Haque nods in agreement.

“If they think they can shoot us, we will retaliate with whatever we can lay our hands on. So what if we’ve voted for the CPM all these years? We don’t care for the party any more,” says Moin-ul.

Thousands from neighbouring Gangra, Kendiamari, Jadubarichak and South Khali villages gathered at Sonachura this afternoon in a silent show of solidarity.

Death greets a visitor to the village. In the bazaar, a dog gnaws at a charred body. From the nonchalance of the onlookers, it is plain that it is that of a local CPM loyalist.

A kilometre away, the house of CPM leader Debanshu Sashmal has been torched. The battle had definitely not been one-sided.

A crowd stands on the Talpatti bridge as some people reach out to a body floating in the canal.

Watching a procession with the body pass, Panchanan Bera, a small farmer, says: “Blood has started flowing... this agitation will go far. This government doesn’t understand what land means to us.”

Last month, West Bengal’s Left Front government signed India’s biggest foreign direct investment (FDI) deal with the Salim Goup, an Indonesian conglomerate closely linked to the former Indonesian dictator General Suharto.

The founder of the Salim Group is Liem Sioe Liong. Reportedly the richest man in Indonesia, Liem owes much of his fortune to privileges granted him by Suharto, whom he befriended in the 1940s.

Suharto was responsible for the bloody purge of Indonesian Communist Party members and sympathisers between 1965 and 1966 that resulted in more than a million deaths. But this has not stopped Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI [M]) West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee promoting the deal and brushing aside criticisms:

“Why should we rake up the past? They [the Salim Group] have invested in China, too. Our stand is clear. For the development of the state we need capital. We are not concerned about the character of the investor. To me capital has no colour.”

SEZs are set up by state governments, usually in collaboration with the private sector, as self-contained areas with their own water- and power-supply systems. Their great value to the bourgeoisie is that taxes, and labour standards and other regulations are waived.

According to India together, “To woo investors to the zones, the central government has been offering a number of fiscal incentives and concessions. For instance, the zones are deemed as foreign territories as far as trade operations, duties and tariffs are concerned. The units (100 percent export oriented) also have full flexibility in operations. They are exempt from all direct and indirect taxes. No export and import duties, no excise duty, no central or state sales tax and no service tax. The units do not require license for importing capital goods and raw material. 100 percent FDI is allowed in the zones. Repatriation of export profits is also allowed.”

The SEZs also offer investors cheap labour without any legal restrictions or interference from government bodies. Whether workers are blue collar or professional, they face similar working conditions, labouring for 10-12 hours a day for low wages, usually without paid overtime, holiday pay or retirement benefits. These are the sort of conditions that the CPI (M) is introducing into West Bengal as it woos foreign capital and Indian big business.

4 Villagers protesting land acquisition shot dead in West Bengal

Kolkata TV, a Bengali news channel, showed footage of a bullet-riddled Bharat Mandal, a member of the newly formed Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee (Committee to Resist Eviction from Land), lying dead.Along with him 3 other villagers were also killed.

Bharat was taken to a health centre in a rickshaw van but died on early Sunday.

"The CPI-M men raided us in police fatigues and killed him," a villager alleged.

"Bharat has two daughters and a son. I don't know what would happen to his family," the brother of Bharat Mandal said.

Local journalists claimed the attack was organised by the CPI-M men who started throwing bombs from across the river at Khejuri towards Nandigram.

Opposition parties have called for a 24-hour shutdown on Tuesday.

The Rapid Action Force (RAF) was deployed in Nandigram after the violence even as Left Front leaders demanded an immediate meeting of the Front to discuss the situation.

At least 22 mass organisations on Saturday formed a body to prevent any attempt by the West Bengal government to acquire land for a chemical hub and a special economic zone (SEZ) in Nandigram that saw violent protests against the proposal this week.

The Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee (Committee to Resist Eviction from Land) was formed to prevent any move to acquire land for a proposed project by the Salim group of Indonesia and the state government even as CPI-M activists flexed their muscles and drew a battle line with the angry farmers and residents.

"We will not give any land for industrialisation here at any cost or price. We will teach the government a lesson if they use force," said a representative of the new body.

Overnight clashes at Nandigram between CPM supporters and villagers backed by the Trinamool and other parties have left six people dead and several others seriously injured.

The police have not been able to go into the area during the night long bombing and firing. Even Sunday morning, though a huge police force has been rushed to the area, they have not been able to enter the villages.

On Saturday, the police had met with representatives from the Congress, the Trinamool, the SUCI and the Jamaat-e-Ulema-e-Hind. It was decided that the police would not enter the villages and the parties would try and restore peace themselves.

Fake Maoists at surrender show

Raipur: Chhattisgarh's BJP government has come under fire for getting scores of tribal civilians to surrender as Maoists.

The Congress on Friday said that 79 rebels including seven women, who surrendered before Chief Minister Raman Singh and Home Minister Ramvichar Netam in Wednesday, were innocent tribal civilians who had been persuaded by the government to surrender as Maoists.

The claims of the Congress were boosted with police refusing to provide crime details of a majority of the surrendered Maoists.

"A few have a criminal background. All the surrendered Maoists were Dalam member's a local affiliate of the banned outfit Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) but we do not have their criminal records," a police official told IANS.

Raman Singh described the surrender function as a historic day and provided Rs 1,000 to all the rebels, who took oath of joining the mainstream.

Congress veteran and former chief minister Ajit Jogi questioned the surrender exercise and criticised the Raman government for "staging a ceremony of fake Maoists".

Jogi said the government had forcibly brought "innocent tribals to Raipur from trouble-hit Bastar areas" to claim that they had been achieving success against the leftist militants.

He said that the BJP government should resign on moral grounds for staging a "ceremony of tribal civilians who were branded Maoists for political gains".

Chhattisgarh is the worst of 13 Maoist affected states. About 50,000 tribals of 600 forested villages are being held in to government-run concentration camps in Bastar since June 2005 when Salwa Judum ( a state sponsered terror campaign) against the rebels was initiated.

A million mutinies are brewing across the country. People are protesting in Nandigram and Singur in West Bengal over land acquisition, in Orissa's Kashipur they are opposing mining, the fishing community in Mundhra, Gujarat, is agitating against a special economic zone that threatens their livelihood.

What is common to all these protests is that the target of the protestors is the government mafia raj. The reason is that state governments which are acting as facilitators for private companies setting up projects have failed to take the people into confidence.

Men holding office believe that the janata(people) is an ignorant lot and should be treated as such. The mere fact that a government is elected doesn't make it democratic; it is the participation of people in governance that makes for a democracy.

The case of political parties is no different. A healthy democracy is possible only if political parties have within them a culture of debate and discussion. Unfortunately, most parties in India ignore political education of their cadres.

Even communist parties like the CPM, which claim a culture of in-house debate, refuse to discuss public policy among their cadre when in government.

They also believe that a mere show of force is enough to silence any critics
but it has been seen that protests are acquiring more and more militant
overtures.

If the present state of affairs continue then India could
see a major nationwide uprising soon.

Two days after a farmers' uprising against land acquisition in this East Midnapore constituency of West Bengal, 'outsiders', including media persons, were prevented from entering the area chosen by the government for a chemical hub and special economic zone (SEZ) with Indonesia's Salim group over 14,000 acres.

Journalists alleged they were stopped at a distance of 9 km from Nandigram, about 150 km from Kolkata, by CPI-M men who 'patrolled' the area as angry residents moved about with swords, staves and other weapons in a free for all.

The CPI-M activists have set up 'check posts' at places on way to Nandigram to 'scrutinise' the entry of people even though the administration has not yet imposed Section 144 CrPC.

'There would be a large number of arrests in the area after the situation returns to normal. We will take action soon,' Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Roy told reporters.

CPI-M leader in Nandigram Surapati Debnath told a Bengali news channel that faced resistance in the area: 'We had to set up these check points because many outsiders are entering the area and fomenting trouble.'

The villagers meanwhile are guarding the area to prevent entry of policemen.

Sensing trouble, the police are showing restraint for the time being.

On Wednesday, the police had to fire several rounds to quell frenzied villagers at Nandigram who set a police jeep on fire, heavily injured cops, blocked roads with boulders and demolished a bridge to prevent police access to their areas after word of land acquisition notification spread.

The situation has remained explosive since then, prompting Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya and the CPI-M to go on the back foot even as Left Front constituent CPI (the Nandigram Assembly seat is held by the CPI) criticised the former for its land acquisition policies.

Nandigram, Jan. 5: Fearing attacks from villagers whose land is to be acquired for a special economic zone (SEZ), nearly 250 CPM members have fled Garchakraberia, Sonachura and Rajaramchak in Nandigram.

Although there were no fresh incidents of violence today, Nandigram continued to be on edge.

The villagers’ frenzy has left even the organisers of the protests against land acquisition flummoxed. Local leaders of the Trinamul Congress, Congress, SUCI and the Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind are apprehensive whether they would be able to hold on to the reins for long.

“We were the ones who started this movement. But now, we’re not sure whether the protesters will listen to us,” said Bhabani Das, a member of the SUCI’s East Midnapore district committee.

Around 1 this afternoon, about 150 farmers armed with spears, sickles and sticks marched into Tekhali, a CPM stronghold. The communists, too, geared up for a confrontation. But the Rapid Action Force defused the situation.


The local CPM leadership has opened a camp in Tekhali to provide shelter to CPM workers and supporters who have fled their homes. “They are afraid of attacks as we are perceived as being behind the move to take away the villagers’ land,” said Pratap Sahu, a member of the party’s Nandigram zonal committee.

After the mob set fire to the CPM local committee office in Rajaramchak yesterday, the party’s office in Sonachura and the Citu office were put under lock and key.

“The farmers have targeted us. They are seeking us out to demand Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000 as donation for their movement against land acquisition,” said Badal Mondal of the Nandigram zonal committee who has fled from Sonachura.

Opposition leaders today promised the police top brass that they would pacify the villagers if the officers promised not to raid the villages.



Since the flare-up on Wednesday, an armed mob has demolished concrete slabs on the approaches to six bridges and dug up four roads in about 50 places, cutting off the villages.

After being persecuted by King Gyanendra's regime and the new multi-party government, Nepal's homosexual community is now at the receiving end of a society clean up drive launched by Maoist rebels.

The communists, who now freely roam in the capital after they signed a peace accord with the new government of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and had the terrorist tag lifted, have now turned their attention to cleaning "social pollutants", ranging from pornographic films to homosexuality.

Kathmandu's gays, who had joined hands with the Maoists and political parties to oppose King Gyanendra's direct rule, felt the new communist crackdown last month after Maoist cadres went around ordering house owners not to let out rooms to homosexuals and lesbians.

Alarmed at the new diktat, members of the community met the former Maoist commander of Kathmandu valley, known as Sagar, to persuade him to call off the drive.

"We don't want to evict anyone," Sagar told the agency.

"So we have asked house owners to allow tenants. However, we are against any aberrant activity that could have a negative and vitiating effect on society."

The insurgents, who have been campaigning against polygamy, polyandry, infidelity and drunkenness, have a zero tolerance policy towards homosexuality.

Blue Diamond Society, Nepal's only NGO fighting for gay rights, last month met a senior Maoist leader, Dev Gurung, to try and explain the rights of gays, lesbians and transgenders to him.

The rebel leader reportedly told the organisation that homosexuality was a byproduct of capitalism.

"Under Soviet rule and when China was still very much a communist state, there were no homosexuals in the Soviet Union or China," Gurung reportedly said.

"Now they are moving towards capitalism, homosexuals may have arisen there as well.

Nepal Rebels to Help Protect Rhinos

Nepal's communist rebels, who have halted their decade-old insurgency, agreed to patrol the country's southern jungles to protect endangered one-horned rhinos against poaching, officials said Friday.

Maoist rebels at Chitwan National Park are to begin patrolling the jungles in the area about 125 miles south of the capital Katmandu, said local rebel leader Abiral, who uses only one name.

The rebels and forest officials agreed Thursday to jointly patrol the Chitwan forests where there have been several reports of rhinos being killed by poachers in recent weeks.

Thousands of tourists flock to the Chitwan jungles each year to catch a glimpse of the endangered animals, but the rhinos are rapidly disappearing in other parts of Nepal.

Officials estimate that there are several hundred one-horned rhinos in the Chitwan forests, but forest officials fear that all 84 rhinos in the nearby Bardia area may have disappeared altogether.

Kalinga Nagar (Jajpur), Jan. 2: The battle against displacement donned a “red” look in Kalinga Nagar today, exactly a year after 13 tribals were killed in police firing during an anti-industry protest.

Holding red flags and shouting lal salaam, more than 5,000 delegates from Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Bengal — representing groups such as the CPI(ML), All India Kisan Mazdoor Sabha and front organisations of the Naxalites — participated in a rally from the “martyrs’ column” in Champakoila village to the veerbhumi in Ambagadia, where the 13 firing victims had been cremated.

The column was built joining 13 pieces of laterite stone symbolising the 13 victims — Sudam Barla, Bana Badra, Govind Laguri, Rama Jamuda, Ati Jamuda, Ranglal Munduya, Bhagaban Soy, Landu Jarika, Shyama Gagrai, Rama Gagrai, Diyugi Tiria, Janga Jarika and Mukta Bankira.

Police had opened fire on this day last year when the villagers were protesting against construction of a boundary wall around land marked for a Tata Steel plant. Thirteen villagers and one policemen were killed in the clash.

Slogans such as “Kalinga Nagar martyrs lal salaam”, “kisanoke zamin videshioko dena bandh karo” and “Manmohan, Naveen hosh mein aao” filled the air even as the tribals paid homage to their beloved.

Pradip Singh Thakur, a CPI-ML (New Democracy) leader from Bengal, said: “We have come here to express solidarity with the people of Kalinga Nagar, who have been successfully fighting against displacement.”

About 25 platoons of armed police were deployed to maintain law and order but they were seen sitting inside the local police station when the rally was taken out.

IG (law and order) B.B. Mishra said the situation was under control and the police had been instructed to exercise restraint.

After reaching the veerbhumi, the rallyists paid tribute to the victims. Earlier in the day, the family members and relatives of the firing victims offered flowers and oil in a ritual called diridulsunum.

The rally ended with a meeting in which a joint declaration was adopted pledging support to the agitation in Kalinga Nagar.

Gaddar, whose real name is Gummadi Vittal Rao, has been using folk art forms of singing for over three decades to depict the suffering of peasants, labourers and other weaker sections.

By IANS, [RxPG] Hyderabad, Jan 3 - Fearing threat to his life from police, revolutionary balladeer and Maoist sympathiser Gaddar has urged the Andhra Pradesh governor to provide him with security.

Gaddar said he was facing threat to his life from police for raising his voice against the killing of Maoist guerrillas by police in 'fake' gun battles and for supporting the movement for separate statehood to Telangana region.

In a letter to Governor Rameswar Thakur, Gaddar sought protection saying that he was an ambassador for peace and was singing for the cause of the poor and the oppressed.

Gaddar survived an assassination bid April 6, 1997 here. Two of the three bullets fired at him were removed while one was left untouched because of medical complications. The balladeer had blamed the police for the attack.

He received several threats in the last few years, Gaddar said. He alleged that the police were using surrendered Maoists to eliminate those fighting against 'police excesses'.

Gaddar, whose real name is Gummadi Vittal Rao, has been using folk art forms of singing for over three decades to depict the suffering of peasants, labourers and other weaker sections.

He had formed Praja Natya Mandali, which was seen as the cultural wing of then People's War Group. After emerging from self-imposed hiding for five years in 1990, he continued spreading revolutionary ideology through songs.

It is useful to recognize, within this context, that the threat of the Maoists is "not limited to the areas of immediate violence, nor does this threat vanish if violence is not manifested at a particular location for a specific period of time. It is in the complex processes of political activity, mass mobilisation, arms training and military consolidation that the Maoist potential has to be estimated."

Significantly, the CPI-Maoist has established "Regional Bureaus across a mass of nearly two-thirds of the country's territory, and these regions are further sub-divided into state, special zonal and special area committee jurisdictions, where the processes of mobilisation have been defined and allocated to local leaders. This structure of organisation substantially reflects current Maoist plans, but does not exhaust their perspectives or ambitions.

There is further evidence of preliminary activity for the extension of operations to new areas including Gujarat, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Meghalaya, beyond what is reflected in the scope of the regional, zonal and state committees."

Maoists have also articulated a new strategy to target urban centres in their "Urban Perspective Document", drawing up guidelines for "working in towns and cities", and for the revival of a mobilization effort targeting students and the urban unemployed. Two principal 'industrial belts' have been identified as targets for urban mobilisation: Bhilai-Ranchi-Dhanbad-Calcutta and Mumbai-Pune-Surat-Ahmedabad.

Nandigram (West Bengal): The West Bengal government on Thursday said no official notification for acquisition of land at Nandigram in West Bengal has been issued yet and that villagers are reacting to rumours.

Angry villagers and police clashed on Wednesday over the state government acquiring land for a special economic zone (SEZ). There hasn't been any violence on Thursday but the protests are likely to continue.

The notification – indicating the mouzas or wards where the proposed land acquisition will take place – reportedly triggered the violence at Nandigram in East Midnapore.

The state administration said no official land acquisition notice had been issued and that villagers reacted to rumours.

They attacked panchayat offices in protest. And the police resisted by firing 15 rounds in the air but that only made matters worse.

Local residents also dug up roads and destroyed bridges to completely cut off the area targeted for acquisition. Police say they are waiting for things to calm down.

"We are monitoring the situation. We can't risk going there now," said Midnapore Range Inspector General of Police Arun Kumar Gupta.

In Nandigram the West Bengal government wants to acquire ten to fourteen thousand acres spread over 27 mouzas or wards. This will cause large-scale displacement of the people and also disrupt their livelihood.

Land in Nandigram is not as fertile as in Singur. But that isn't going to make Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's life easier.

People in Nandigram feel they have been neglected through decades. And the protests are likely to get firmer.

Finally, what has made matters worse here is lack of development. Schools are in a shambles, and the government has done little or nothing to improve irrigation facilities.

Frustration has now turned into anger, making the land acquisition in Nandigram difficult.

Pune, January 01: SUGAR-RICH western Maharashtra will be in for a shock of sorts on January 7 as Gaddar, a revolutionary Telugu balladeer and Naxal activist from Andhra Pradesh, will perform at the Shaniwarwada. Known for his fiery performances, the stated aim of bringing the activist’s troupe to the city is to mobilise the ‘anti establishment rage’ amongst the masses over the Khairlanji killings, the quota controversy and acquisition of land for Special Economy Zones (SEZs) anti-labour policies and farmers’ suicides.

The Abhivyakti Swatantrya Bachao Samiti, a platform created by over a dozen leftist organisations a couple of months ago, has organised show, which is probably the first time that leftist organisations are organising a public programme in the region. The show will be free of cost and open to all.

Gaddar will arrive in the city from Hyderabad just hours before the show along with an associate, while the other members of his troupe will travel to Pune from Mumbai. However, the tour will not be a hasty one for the performer also plans to stay in the city for at least a day after the show.

Better known for his Telugu songs, Gaddar will perform in the city in Hindi.

Convener of the samiti, Sanjay Dabhade said that though Gaddar is little-known in western Maharashtra, his show is expected to draw huge crowds from the city and rural outskirts.

And with various dalit parties like Republican Party of India and organisations like Narmada Bachao Andolan and SEZ Virodhi Kriti Samiti associated with the Abhivyakti Bachao Swatantrya Samiti, the organisers reaching out to the slum dwellers may not be a difficult task.

But ensuring that the word is spread around, the samiti has printed over 10,000 hand bill and plans to put up posters and banners, besides using vehicles with loudspeakers to promote the show.

“Gaddar’s show is meant to be a public cultural protest against suppression of the masses by the State. It is also meant to give vent to the unrest amongst the masses,’’ Dabhade said.

About Gaddar

* Gummadi Vittal Rao came to be know as Gaddar as a tribute to the pre-independence revolutionist Gadar party. Born in 1949 in Medak district, Gaddar comes from a poor dalit family. He dropped out of Osmania University after his first year of engineering to earn a living and in 1969, joined the struggle for a separate Telangana state and formed a burrakatha (a kind of folk art) troupe.

* In early 1970s, Gaddar got associated with ‘Art Lovers Association’, formed by Narsing Rao, who was linked to the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist). In the mid 1980s, Gaddar started voicing his protest against the killing of several Dalits by upper caste landlords in Prakasam district and went underground after the police raided his house.

* During exile, he started spreading the revolutionary ideology through folk arts, adapting folk forms such as Oggu Katha, Veedhi Bhagotham and Yellamma Katha.

* After four-and-a-half years of exile Gaddar emerged from hiding. He was shot at
on April 6, 1997, but survived. In 2001 and 2004, he was among those named by the Peoples’ War Group as its emissaries for peace.

A few Naxalites have been killed in encounter while some of the police personnel to have laid down their lives. But the solution to this ever-increasing problems seems not be arriving soon. The recent death of Naxal Dinakar in an encounter has once again resulted in hyper activities in both the camps.

A recent press note signed by one Gangadhar on behalf of Maoists Naxal Committee is a clear indication that the Naxalites are not budging. They still believe that bullet is stronger than ballet. The press note said that the Naxals would avenge the death of their comrades. "The police have behaved worse than animals by firing at the group which was holding a meeting in the deep forest area. They could have surrounded the group and arrested the comrades. Instead they resorted to firing in the name of encounter. The police who were involved in this heinous crime and the government led by chief minister H D Kumaraswamy which supported this would pay dearly for this," the press release stated.

The press release further stated that Dinakar was a true revolutionary who fought for peace and justice. But the government killed him terming him to be an anti-social element. "However, these setbacks would not deter us and our motives. Instead these will make us still strong and more determined in our fight against the stagnated system," stated the release.

Maoists blow up revenue office in Visakhapatnam

VISAKHAPATNAM: Cadres of CPI (Maoist) blew up the Pedabayalu mandal revenue office in the district late on Tuesday night in retaliation to the exchange of fire in which party central committee member V Chandramouli and his wife Kavita were killed.

Eight Maoists reached the MRO office around midnight and blasted the building with detonators after sending out MRO Dharma Rao and deputy tahsildar Raghunath Panigrahi, who were sleeping in the office, and the watchman.

According to information reaching here, the Maoists condemned ‘murder of the Maoist couple’ and vowed to avenge the killings.

They appealed to people to make the bandh called by them on January 10, a success.

Upon receiving the information from the villagers after an hour, the Pedabayalu police visited the spot.

Following the incident, police intensified combing, in view of the possibility of more such attacks and reports of some top Maoist leaders moving in the area.

DHARMAPURI: The Dharmapuri Naxal Special Duty (NSD) wing police will conduct special physical training camp for the rural youths, planning to attend Uniformed Services Test in January 2007.

The NSD wing inspector R Senthil said in a release that as per the instructions of the District Collector and the Superintendent of Police, the special physical training would be conducted from January 2 to 20 under the Dharmapuri District Socio Economic Development Scheme to enable the youth to attend the selection test.

The free coaching would be conducted at District Sports Stadium, Dharmapuri, R C Higher Secondary School, Harur and Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Pennagaram. Sports coachers and experts from the NSD wing would train the aspirants. Candidates who passed Standard X are eligible to apply. They should register their names with the coaching centres and the NSD wing inspector concerned, he added.

movement, violence erupted again Wednesday over land acquisition for a project for Indonesia's Salim Group when police fired several rounds to quell frenzied villagers at Nandigram in West Bengal.

Villagers, who blocked roads with boulders and destroyed a bridge to prevent police access to their areas, said at least four of their people, including a 12-year-old boy, sustained bullet injuries in the unprovoked firing even as police said it was mob attack on the cops angry over the publication of gazette on notification for the acquisition.

'At least five policemen were injured in the mob attack. We have no report of any injury of the villagers,' Inspector General of Police - Raj Kanojia told IANS in Kolkata.

'It was a mob attack on the policemen,' Kanojia said. The injured policemen included two assistant sub-inspectors.

'They have fired at least 15 rounds and injured four villagers. The injured included a 12-year-old,' said Sheikh Khusbani, a teacher from Nandigram in East Midnapore district while another villager claimed that the police attacked processionists protesting against the notification peacefully.

'We will give blood and our life but not our land. We don't want industry. They are trying to grab our home and hearth,' said Samsur, a villager from Nandigram, summing up the explosive situation in Nandigram.

Footage shown by news channel Kolkata TV showed villagers digging roads to prevent police access to the area.

The agitation of the villagers was led by an organisation called Gana Unnayan O Jana Adhikar Raksha Samity -, which is a constituent of the Singur Krishijami Raksha Committee -.

'This will continue so long the government continues to keep people in the dark and not maintain transparency. The Nandigram incident is a continuation of the Singur movement only,' said social activist Anuradha Talwar.

Talwar, an associate of Medha Patkar in West Bengal, said so long the government continued to bulldoze the people such things would happen.

The Congress and Socialist Unity Centre of India - have called a shutdown in the area to protest the police action.

Reports pouring in from the East Midnapore district said the angry mob also set on fire a police jeep in retaliation at Sonachura as violence escalated over the acquisition of land at Nandigram, about 150 km from here near the Haldia port town, for a chemical hub to be set up by Salim in collaboration with the government.

Reports said several people were injured in the firing even as people in large number were gathering in the area triggering fears of more violence. Heavy deployment of policemen was being made to deal with the situation as violence was spreading to other villages.

Hardly had the dust settled over the Singur land acquisition in Hooghly district, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya had a fresh troubled spot to cope with as tension gripped the area over land acquisition.

In East Midnapore the state government reportedly eyed over 22,000 acres of land for industrial projects.

Recently social activist Medha Patkar visited the area to support the villagers resisting the acquisition.

On July 31, the West Bengal government signed an agreement with the Salim Group of Indonesia to implement various developmental projects, including the setting up of a mega chemical industrial estate, including a chemical special economic zone - at Nandigram, spread across 10,000 acres in a 50:50 joint venture.

Construction of a four-lane road bridge over the Haldi River, from Haldia to Nandigram, has also been planned. The proposed bridge would provide a link between Haldia and the proposed chemicals SEZ in Nandigram.
