MUMBAI: Opposition to the 1200 MW coal-based thermal power plant and port in Jaigad in Ratnagiri district is being stepped up, with about 40 Shiv Sainiks attacking the office of JSW Energy Ltd, an O.P. Jindal Group company on Thursday. Twelve persons were arrested for the offence. The Shiv Sena is the only political party supporting the farmers and fisherfolk in the region.

The thermal power plant on the coast as well as the proposed port has been drawing protests from mango farmers in the region and the fisherfolk. The Ratnagiri Zilla Jagruk Manch had filed a writ petition last year in the Bombay High Court challenging the manner in which public hearings were held for the plant. The court issued orders on April 26 asking the National Environmental Engineering Institute (NEERI) in Nagpur to conduct a study in coordination with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB).

Dr. Vivek Bhide, president of the Manch, told The Hindu from Ratnagiri that NEERI had submitted a report to the court in July which clearly said that the company’s coal handling system was not proper in view of the high wind s peeds in the area.

The Shiv Sena has now entered the arena against the Mukesh Ambani promoted Special Economic Zone (SEZ). They have threatened to take the issue to the streets if the agricultural land of the farmers is acquired forcibly.

Twenty activists and the farmers in the vicinity of Mahamumbai SEZ under the banner of SEZ Virodhi Shetkari Sangharsha Sanghatana have launched an indefinite fast from July 18, to protest the multi-crore project.

The agitators are camping in front of the Tehsildar’s office at Pen in Raigad district. They are demanding that 24 villages from Pen Taluka which would fall in the SEZ should not be forcibly acquired and the entire project be scrapped immediately.

Ramdas Kadam, the Shiv Sena leader and Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly on Saturday visited Pen and met the agitators. While addressing the farmers near the Tehsil Office, he warned the government not to acquire cultivable lands in Pen Taluka and its vicinity for
Reliance’s Mahamumbai SEZ project.

Kadan said, “If agricultural lands are taken away forcibly, we will not let any car from the government move on the streets in the state. We can’t tolerate this type of vandalism. It should be stopped immediately.”

Those taking part in the fast include Ulka Mahajan, Vaishali Patil, Dr. Pradip Patkar and farmers who are likely to be affected by this project.

KOLKATA: Adding to the land acquisition row at Nandigram and Singur, there's now a fresh flutter that is adding resonance to the SEZ issue. This time, it is not farmers or political leaders, but a popular Bengali movie that has raised a storm in certain pockets of West Bengal.

There has been much dissident in the political circles after the release of "Tulkalam" starring popular Bollywood star Mithun Chakraborty, where he plays the role of a young leader fighting against land acquisition.

While the movie has reportedly turned out to be a box office hit, owners of some theatres across the state have distributed leaflets in an attempt to further attract the public.

They have urged cinegoers saying it gives the real story behind the Nandigram and Singur controversies. They have dubbed "Tulkalam" as a real-life document of the genocide and mass rape that took place in Nandigram.

The leaflets are mainly distributed across Nandigram-adjacent Kontai, Ramnagar, Digha and Paniparul areas in east Midnapore district. Incidentally, in all these areas, the cinema hall owners are reportedly active Trinamool Congress members.

The CPI(M) local committees have vehemently protested against such unnecessary political mileage. A Pramanik, the CPI(M) Ramnagar local committee secretary, has filed a complaint against the mass distribution of leaflets to the police.

According to Pramanik, the leaflets have been deliberately distributed to malign the image of the CPI(M). The police have stopped circulation of the leaflets.

Miffed by the police interference, the local Trinamool leadership in East Midnapore has decided to go for a counter propaganda. They are planning to gherao Ramnagar police station anytime this week to protest against the police action. Trinamool MLA, S Adhikari said the CPI(M) is in the backfoot on the Nandigram issue and hence they are scared of such harmless leaflets.

Biman seeks NRI help as SEZ war hits cyberspace

Kolkata, June 26: CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose is taking the “facts” on Nandigram and Singur to the US. Bose is leaving for the country on June 27 to raise funds for his non-governmental organisation, Vidyasagar Foundation, which works on literacy programmes in rural areas.

However, he is extending his fund-raising trip by eight days during which he will talk to influential Bengali NRIs on what happened at Nandigram to counter the Internet campaign launched by Naxalite groups and the Trinamool Congress. The cyber campaign centres around the police firing of March 14 at Nandigram in which 14 villagers were killed when a protest against a now-abandoned land acquisition programme turned violent.

For the Vidyasagar Foundation trip, Bose is going to Detroit, the headquarters of the Uttar America Banga Sanskriti Sammelan or North American Bengali Cultural Conference. He will be accompanied by Anup Sarkar and three other office-bearers of the Vidyasagar Foundation.

Sarkar told Newsline: “We have already fixed up five meetings in the US with influential Bengali groups there.” The North American Bengali Conference will be held in Detroit from June 29 to July 1. “After this, Biman da will meet Bengali professionals who are US citizens to discuss Nandigram,” Sarkar said.

Earlier, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had decided to use non-resident Indian supporters of her party and of the Naxals to propagate the anti-CPI(M) campaign over Nandigram. Mamata and her Naxal allies have already chosen three influential NRIs for this task. Trinamool sources said these people have begun their campaign among the Bengali community.

Asansol June 20: The land agitation in Purushottampur came under a formal political umbrella today with the Opposition floating a Bhoomi Uchchhed Pratirodh Committee, like the one in Nandigram.

Trinamul Congress leader Partha Chatterjee today visited the village, in Burdwan district’s Asansol sub-division, accompanied by members of the Congress, SUCI, BJP and a Naxalite faction.

Chatterjee, the leader of the Opposition, threatened to “paralyse normal life in Asansol” if the 126 men and women arrested on Sunday were not released within 48 hours.

The Purushottampur residents were handcuffed after they clashed with the police while trying to prevent the takeover of 240 acres for the modernisation of the IISCO Steel Plant.

Chatterjee urged the villagers to join the Pratirodh Committee to campaign for their demands. “We are fighting to give the farmers and land losers justice in Singur and Nandigram. Come with us, we will fight for you.”

Villagers who attended the meeting — most of them were women — shouted slogans and raised hands in support.

The leaders warned the government against “playing” with the lives of the the poor villagers.

“The IISCO Steel Plant authorities will have to provide a permanent job to at least one member from each (land loser) family and higher compensation. The administration will have to withdraw policemen from the village, or else we will go for a more aggressive agitation,” Trinamul leader Moloy Ghatak said.

The residents of Purushottampur are happy that the politicians are lending them a helping hand.

“If the leaders can help us, what’s wrong with it? Mamata Banerjee is fighting for the poor land losers in Singur and Nandigram. We are happy that she has sent her representatives to us. We have requested Partha Chatterjee to get our husbands and sons back from jail,” said 35-year-old Moyna Roy.

Seventy-two-year old Gouri Roy, whose two unemployed sons were arrested on Sunday, fell at Chatterjee’s feet and wept. “Please bring back my sons home. I am poor and aged. I cannot live alone.”

The Trinamul leader also met the managing director of the steel plant, Nilotpal Roy, and demanded permanent jobs for the land losers.

Reacting to the Opposition’s threats, Burdwan district magistrate Manish Jain said the government would take action against anybody trying to disrupt peace.

“We fixed the rate of compensation after discussing everything in detail with the villagers. We don’t know who are instigating them against us,” he said.

CPM leaders reiterated that they would tell villagers to “come out of the Opposition’s trap.”

“We won’t allow the Trinamul or any other Opposition party to turn Purushottampur into another Singur or Nandigram,” said Partha Mukherjee, the Asansol zonal committee secretary.
