Maoists publicly execute Chhattisgarh Congress leader
Raipur, July 4 (IANS) Maoist rebels in Chhattisgarh have shot dead a Congress leader in front of hundreds of people after he had been held guilty of being involved in anti-insurgency activities by a 'jan adalat', public court, and sentenced to death.
Police here said the incident took place Monday in Dantewada district when armed cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) summoned Chhanulal and three of his family members in Nilwaya village, 400 km from here, and produced him in the kangaroo court.
About 500 tribals looked on as the court read out the chargesheet against the leader for his involvement in anti-insurgency activities and pronounced the death sentence.
"The rebels assaulted the Congress leader's family members and set them free but pumped several rounds of bullets into Chhanulal's body, minutes after the jan adalat awarded the death sentence," said a senior police officer.
Chhanulal, 48, an aide of Congress leader Mahendra Karma, died on the spot.
Maoists traditionally hold their own courts before which they have their enemies produced, announce the sentence and execute them in full public view, police said.
In another incident last week, Maoists raided the house of another Congress leader Lalit Markam, in his ancestral village in Dantewada and shot him dead. Markam was closely associated with the anti-Maoist Salwa Judum (State sponsered terror) movement launched last year in June.
