KOLKATA, Aug 12: The blueprint of the murder of Tapasi Malik, 18-year-old Singur Krishi Jomi Raksha Committee supporter, was drawn up at Kamarkundu railway station in the first week of December last year, said a senior CBI officer. The four murderers, whose sketches have been released by the CBI a few weeks ago, had come to Singur twice before committing the murder, the officer said requesting anonymity.
They had gathered information about local communication links around Singur, the officer said. Investigating officers, who examined nearly 60 people, including some local auto-rickshaw drivers, in connection with the murder case till today, suspect that the killers didn’t avail public transport while leaving Singur following the murder.
The killers, who came to Singur for the last time on 17 December evening, were provided with shelter at an abandoned crematorium near Bajemelia primary health centre where they spent nearly seven hours. Later, they were directed to assemble in a playground lying close to Bajemelia primary health centre late in the night and CPI-M activist, Mr Debu Malik, a key accused in the murder case, was instructed to accompany them to the site where Tapasi was raped and then charred to death.
The CBI officer, who interrogated the CPI-M activist said that Mr Malik was “unaware” of the identities of the killers. “He told us during interrogation that he was beaten up by the killers when he enquired about their identities,” said the CBI officer. Mr Malik, the officer said, has given a 12-page statement under 164 CrPC before a magistrate of Patiala house court in Delhi after his arrest. Dismissing media reports that the murderers had come from either Jharkhand or Bihar, the officer said that it was a handiwork of members of a local crime syndicate.
It can be recalled that a CBI team led by the agency’s deputy superintendent of police, Mr Partha Sarathi Basu, had inspected Bajemelia crematorium and took photographs of that place last week. The team also inspected the ground near Bajemelia primary health centre where the murders had gathered around 1.30 am on 18 December.
