Orissa DIG killed due to accidental firing
Tuesday, October 24, 2006 (Bhubaneshwar):
Jaswinder Singh, the DIG in-charge of the naxal-dominated southwestern Orissa was killed due to accidental firing by his two personal guards.
Both the guards have been taken into police custody.
The 44-year-old IPS officer of 1990 batch was going to Padmapur when his car was intercepted by a group of people asking for puja donation at Guma Ghat near Laxmipur.
As he refused to pay and was about to get into the car, he was shot from behind.
Jaswinder Singh died even before he could be taken to hospital.
"At a place called Burja some people were collecting chanda. He chased these people out. After he sat down in the vehicle, two shots were fired at his car - one hit the car and the other hit Jaswinder Singh on his head," said Amrendra Patnaik, DGP, Orissa, Bhubaneswar.
"He was brought dead to Raygada hospital," added the DGP.
Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had on Monday announced Rs 10 lakh as compensation for the family.
